Story of an elderly street performer and his adopted pupil in Republican China, circa 1920s. Looking for a young boy to whom he can pass on the secrets of his art, Wang buys a child from a starving family and finds his life takes on new meaning. However, he is horrified to discover the child, 'Doggie', is a girl and although he agrees to keep her and train her he is adamant that the mask techniques of his profession can only be taught to a male. Doggie does her best to put things right.
