Synopsis

The eighth programme in a twenty-six part history of the 20th century. Tells the story of the mass unemployment that affected much of the world in the 1930s. As banks and companies in Europe and the United States collapsed, the farmers and miners in Latin America, Asia and Africa suffered too. Workers from the USA, Chile, Britain, Belgium and Scandinavia recall the misery and waste of the hungry thirties. Includes material on the Wall Street crash of 1929, abandoned nitrate mining towns in the Chilean desert, the Jarrow March, the 1932 election in Sweden when the Social Democratic Party came to power, and Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal.
