Chronicles the unlikely friendship that develops between two Irish mothers whose sons take part in the "dirty protest" and hunger strike staged by IRA prisoners led by Bobby Sands in Long Kesh prison in 1981 in protest against the British government's withdrawal of their special category status as political prisoners. One of the women, a middle-aged widow, school teacher and pacifist is initially reluctant to be drawn into IRA activity, the other is a firebrand Republican with a passionate hatred for the British.
