After her mother dies in a car accident, a 13 year-old girl is sent to Ontario to live with her father, a sculptor and inventor. Her parents parted nine years previously, and grieving for her mother, she finds it very difficult to come to terms with the situation. Her only enjoyment comes from watching the Canada geese, and when she discovers some orphaned eggs, she takes them home and builds a makeshift incubator. The goslings hatch and thrive, regarding her as their mother, and she is faced with the problem of showing them how to migrate south.
