Synopsis

Loosely based on real-life incident, set in 1968 Vietnam. It is discovered that the villagers of Dak Nhe have been friendly to the US soldiers in their area; in reprisal the Viet Cong kill the village's prize elephant. The US platoon captain promises to obtain another elephant - within five days - in time for a ceremonial ritual. The elephant that is bought, transported through 200 miles of jungle and finally parachuted into the village, can only be commanded by a surly orphan boy whose father died years earlier in cross-fire between the US and North Vietnamese armies.
