First part of the adaptation of the Jane Austen novel. Mr and Mrs Bennet have five daughters and Mrs Bennet a vain frivolous woman, is keen to marry them off. Therefore there is great excitement in the Bennet household when they learn that Netherfield Hall is to be let by a young single man, Mr Bingley, who has a large fortune. At a ball Elizabeth Bennet meets Mr Darcy, a friend of Mr Bingley's and they take an instant dislike to one another. Mr Bingley takes an obvious shine to her sister Jane, however, who is forced to stay at Netherfield when she catches a bad cold after riding there in the rain to dine, just as her mother planned. Elizabeth goes to keep her company and frequently encounters Mr Darcy whose attitude towards her begins to change, although hers towards him does not. Mr Bingley's snobbish sisters take every opportunity to criticise Elizabeth and her family, although allow that Jane is a "sweet girl".
