Period drama set in North China circa 1946. Xu Fugui gambles away his family mansion and all his inheritance to the boss of a shadow-puppet troupe. The shock kills his father and estranges his wife. Xu Fugui tries to make a living for his mother by running a market stall. His wife, seeing his new humility, decides to return to him. Later Xu Fugui sets up his own puppet troupe, is pressganged into service by the Nationalist army and eventually surrenders to the People's Liberation Army. By the time he returns home China has a Communist government which, over the next few decades, brings its own trials and tribulations for Fugui and his family and acquaintances.
