Synopsis

A musical portrait by Youssou N'Dour, of Dakar, Senegal. In the Medina, where he was born, he reports on the Wolof culture, the main ethnic group of Dakar. He sings to the accompaniment of the kora, a large harp and performs `Africa Remembers'. Shows the `sabar', the traditional drumming and dancing parties organised by young women. The percussionists from Youssou's band Super Etoile de Dakar perform the 'sabar' with the traditional dancing for which the Wolof women are famous. The `sabar' rhythms, called mbalaz, are the basis of Youssou's music and in the studio in Dakar he shows how they are constructed. Concludes with an evening at Youssou's nightclub, the Kilimandjaro.
