Synopsis
Period drama. The life history of a man of "sub-normal" I.Q., from his childhood in Alabama in the 1940s through to the present day. His ability to run fast takes him from his high school football team to college and the All-American squad. He joins the Army and is sent to Vietnam, discovers a talent for ping pong and is decorated as a war hero. After buying a shrimp boat in honour of one of his fallen comrades, and, with the help of the embittered double-leg amputee lieutenant whose life he saved and a fortuitous storm, Gump becomes a millionaire. After the death of his mother, he retires to his childhood home, where he is joined briefly by his childhood friend, a woman who suffered violence and sexual abuse from her father. When she leaves, Gump starts out running, picking up a cult following as he goes. Eventually, he is reunited with Jenny and their son. When Jenny dies of an unspecified "virus", Gump goes on to raise their child alone.
