"Slobodan Milosevic rose to power in Serbia in the late 1980s. Sensing the imminent collapse of communism, he fanned the fires of Serbian nationalism to build a new political power base for himself. This led to tensions throughout the ethnically mixed Yugoslavia, tensions deliberatley exacerbated by Milosevic. Milosevic consolidated his power by taking control of the media. Maggie O'Kane ends her report in the Croatian town of Vukovar, once home to 40,000 people, now a deserted scene of rubble."
