Once Were Warriors (1994)

Film details

Drama, set in contemporary New Zealand, about the life of an urban Maori family living in a poor suburb of Auckland. The father is frequently drunk and violent, and, despite the efforts of the mother, one is taken into care whilst another joins a vicious gang. Only their gifted and innocent teenaged daughter seems untouched by the violence. Then, she is raped by one of her father's friends and hangs herself, an event which changes the family's life forever.
