Synopsis

Programme for the third level course A319. Through interviews with John Kani and Athol Fugard, extracts from `Sizwe Banzi is Dead' and `The Island' and archive footage, a picture is built up of the conditions in South Africa that led to the devising and performing of `The Island'. A brief indication is given of changes brought about in South Africa since that time and their relationship to South African theatre. Extracts are from: `The Island' and `Sizwe Banzi is Dead' by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona; `My Children, My Africa' by Athol Fugard. Includes monochrome footage from 1957 and 1964, plus material shot in 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released from prison.
