Once upon a Time (1991)

Film details

'A bed time story told by Grace, a young African mother to her two children becomes the metaphor for the mother's own life. Metaphor gives way to irony and the fairy story with its flamboyant narrative is visually contrasted with the harsh reality of the woman's life, as the equivalent characters, locations and situations replace on the screen the words that fire young imaginations.' The woman's own story tells of growing up in East London, meeting her sons' father, their eventual marriage and setting up home together on a housing estate where a gang of white youths fills lazy hours taunting and tormenting the father. During an unequal fight to protect his home and family, a white man is accidentally stabbed and the father is imprisoned.
