Film details

The first programme in a four-part series retracing the steps of the most influential intellectuals of the twentieth century, their attempts to foster their visions of freedom, and the confrontation of their ideals with historical and political reality. Considers the poets, artists, philosophers and scientists, who were galvanised by the Alfred Dreyfus affair. "The First World War and the Bolshevik Revolution further impelled them to find the answer to a better world, leading many of them, such as the Surrealists, in 1927, to harken to the tempting call of Communism."
