Santiago is a Spanish Dominican friar sent to the Americas at the beginning of the 16th century. Joining an expedition led by the cruel conquistador Gascuna, he is increasingly shocked by the brutality of his compatriots as they plough deeper into the jungle in search of gold. Eventually they are killed off by poisoned arrows, disease and hunger and only Santiago survives, but he is captured by the native Karina indians. As the years pass he relinquishes his belief, is initiated into the tribe and takes a native wife.
