Period film adaptation of the play by David Henry Hwang. In Beijing in 1964, a French diplomat falls in love with a Chinese Opera singer he believes is a woman. They have an affair, but the singer never reveals his true identity, and he manages to become a spy for the Communist regime, passing along advance information about U.S. plans in Vietnam. When the diplomat insists upon seeing his mate naked, the singer flees and the diplomat returns to Paris.
