A twelve year old girl, Ama, comes across a computer disc in a deserted African encampment which tells her that she has been selected as an ancestral messenger and that her father will die if he does not return to Ghana and her brother Joe, a boxer, will be paralysed at his next fight. Despite Ama's efforts to stop her brother from fighting, she cannot dissuade him as he plans to use the winnings to send his father to Ghana and to free his mother from her cleaning job. During the fight Joe's father does collapse and die while he is beaten and taken to hospital in a coma. After the funeral, Ama is haunted by her father's memory and by thoughts of Africa.
