Synopsis
Looks at the medieval agricultural boom in Northern Europe, with the evolvement of farmers and warriors, ie. knights, whose role it was to protect the former and the land that they worked from marauders. It looks at the boom in grain, wine and wool production and the growth of towns and cities and the building of the great cathedrals, largely due to the geological resource of limestone. It also follows the collapse of the system in the 14th Century, due to over-population and a change in the climate and weather conditions which led to ruined crops and famine, which was followed by the Black Death and subsequent wars and fighting in Europe. It also considers the relevance of agriculture and harvests to historical events, and examines the continued importance to cities of the trade and transport of goods from the countryside and other countries.
