In 1970s Pittsburgh Tom Crick, a history teacher from England, faces a crisis as his wife obssesses about their inability to have a child. When he sees that his students find little relevance in his lectures about the French Revolution, Crick decides to begin telling them about his own upbringing in the East Anglian Fens, and the sexual exploration that led to tragedy.
