Hasari Pal is an impoverished villager who, unable to meet his debts from his smallholding which has been affected by drought, brings his family to Calcutta, where he finds work as a rickshaw puller and moves into the slum area called Ananda Nagar (Bengali for City of Joy). There the family become involved with a disillusioned American doctor who has come to India in search of enlightenment and a dedicated Irish nurse who is struggling to run a clinic and a school for slum dwellers and outcast lepers.
