About an Irishman who, disillusioned with humanity after World War II, finds himself in Spain where he meets up with a band of loggers, led by a man called "El americano". He lives and works with them, moving thousands of logs down the River Tajo. He also meets Paula with whom he falls in love and with his growing friendship with "El americano", he slowly regains faith in human dignity and solidarity.
