We're No Angels (1989)

Film details

Comedy with suspense elements. In 1935, a prisoner makes a bloody breakout from a high-security jail, and forces two other prisoners, Ned and Jimmy, to go with him. Having escaped, Ned and Jimmy make their way across frozen land to a town by the US-Canadian border, hoping to be able to cross over to freedom. The town has a shrine to 'the Weeping Madonna', and the town is hosting its annual gathering of clergy and religious. When Ned and Jimmy get mistaken for two celebrated priests, they play along with it, hoping this will enable them to evade the police and the prison guards, who are looking for them, and help them to make it over the bridge to freedom. Matters are complicated by Ned's involvement with a tough, downtrodden local woman, Molly, whose daughter is deaf and mute, and also by Jimmy's growing popularity (posing as the renowned theologian Father Brown) at the local monastery.
