Macon writes travel guides for business people who hate to travel. Following the death of their 12 year-old son, his wife decides to leave him, and he lives alone with his dog Edward. Depression and a broken leg results in his return to his old family home and the company of his unmarried brothers and sister. Edward has meanwhile grown out of control and Macon is obliged to call on the services of eccentric dog trainer Muriel.
