Romantic comedy fantasy. In Washington, D.C., Louie and Corrine get married in 1963, but on their first wedding anniversary (the day Corrine announces she is pregnant), Louie is killed in a road accident. In the afterlife, Louie insists on coming back to his wife, albeit in another body, and he flees to be reincarnated before having the 'innoculation' injection which should prevent him from having any memories of previous lives. He is thus reborn as Alex Finch, who, 23 years later, happens to befriend of Corinne's daughter Miranda and lawyer friend Philip (who was Louie's best man, and who is secretly in love with Corrine). On visiting Corrine's house (his own former house), Alex begins to remember things he could not possibly know, and soon twigs that he is in fact Louie reincarnated. He does not find it easy to tell or persuade Corrine of this, though she has never moved on emotionally and keeps hoping Louie is somehow still around. Alex/Louie hopes he can win her over before Philip's constant wooing wins her over. Also he is having to bat away the amorous attentions of Miranda, Corrine's (and therefore, effectively, his own) daughter. Meanwhile, Corrine is having to raise two million dollars to keep a museum exhibition of First Ladies' fashions going. Also, a corrupt judge whom Louie was about to expose when he died is still around, unaware that Louie had got some evidence of his taking money from a leading mobster.
