"Cheb" which means "young" in Arabic looks at the predicament of a young teenage boy, who was raised in France. Because of some illegal infraction, he is stripped of his resident-alien status and deported from France - the only home he has known. Conscripted into the Algerian army, he feels a misfit not even being able to speak Arabic. He goes AWOL to join his girlfriend, a French born Arab who cannot accept the traditional Algerian woman's place in society. They then try to evade capture and return to France.
