Murder mystery. While out golfing with Dr Thomas by the Welsh coast, vicar's son Bobby Jones finds a man dying at the foot of a cliff, who utters the mysterious last words, 'Why didn't they ask Evans?' Bobby has to hurry off, but leaves the body to be watched over by passer-by Roger Bassington-ffrench. After the inquest, Bobby and his friend Lady Frances Derwent ('Frankie' to her friends) begin to sense suspicious circumstances around the death, and they investigate. They decide to stage a car crash outside the Bassington-ffrenches' Hampshire home, hoping Frankie will be able to do some undercover amateur sleuthing in the house, with Bobby posing as her chauffeur.
