Two friends who work as stokers on a ship become unknowing rivals in love for a girl who lives near the wharf and works in a saloon. Como is on the run, believed guilty of shooting a policeman in a riot. Mary hides him and falls in love with him. He gets a job on board a ship and becomes friends with Turk, a sailor who is in love with Mary. Como becomes popular when he stands up for the men and Turk protects him from being turned in. However, when they return to port Como and Mary plan to run off together, but Turk proposes to Mary. She agrees in order to obtain money from him to help in her and Como's escape, but when Turk discovers that she is double-crossing him, he angrily informs against Como who is imprisoned. Turk later regrets his actions and uses the reward money he claimed to hire a lawyer for Como to defend him successfully.
