DRAMA. Following the suicide of his father, Stephen Dallas moves from New York to a small town. Here he meets and eventually marries Stella the daughter of a poor mill worker. Stephen is unhappy with Stella's increasingly obvious lack of taste and style and when he is moved back to the New York office the couple effectively split, leaving Stella with their daughter Laurel. Eventually Stella agrees to divorce Stephen allowing him to remarry, she also frees Laurel from her obligations to her rather embarrassing mother which in turn enables Laurel to marry Richard.
