Synopsis
Set in Green Town, Illinois, around the end of the 1920s. During the autumn pumpkin season, soon after the arrival in town of a lightning rod seller, two boys, Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade, are amazed to see a strange carnival arrive just outside town in the middle of the night. By day it is an apparently normal carnival, but it has a sinister secret; the boys soon learn that its leader, Mr Dark, has the power to answer everyone's deepest longings, but at a terrible cost. Charles Halloway, Will's father, who is old and has a weak heart, wishes he could have been more of a father to his son, as Mr Dark soon realises.
