Set in Québéc City on the eve of World War II, the film tells the story of Theophile Plouffe, a typesetter on a Catholic newspaper, and his family, and the changes brought about by the impending war. The arrival of the King for a morale-boosting trip through Canada just before the legislation of conscription exposes the various tensions and prejudices in the province - those between French and English, Catholic and Protestant and the resentment of the Québécois over conscription and having to send their sons to fight for the "English".
