In the Duchy of Seeburg, which has strong anti-gypsy laws, Captain Eric Danilo is sentenced to prison following a duel with the court chamberlain, not least on account of his gypsy blood. In prison he finds himself in the same cell as a milliner by the name of 'Madame Beatrice'. When both escape they meet up with a gypsy band, among whom is Mila who is attracted to Danilo, but they are eventually thrown out because of the gypsies distrust of strangers. The two escapees reach a café where Danilo takes over the gypsy orchestra, making it into a great success. Mila, who has followed them, becomes a dancer with the orchestra. They travel to London where they are also successful, but, during a flight, they crash and find themselves back in Seeburg. Danilo is to be taken out and shot, but the firing squad instead fire in his honour as the gypsy orchestra has become world famous, something which reflects well on Seeburg itself. The anti-gypsy laws are repealed and Danilo and Mila are married.
