In an annual village ritual six untouchables are chosen to be high caste figures for two weeks and have to undergo intensive and vigorous purification and mortification processes. One man dies and cannot be buried by either the untouchables or Brahmins. The son of the village chief revolts against this practice and his father commits suicide, whilst his son consorts with the Untouchables. His further attempts to prevent the process lead to his being killed by a mob.
