Genesis and Catastrophe (1980)

Film details

Based on a short story of the same title by Roald Dahl in his book 'Kiss Kiss', this is a fictionalised account of a true incident. Klara is about to give birth and fears for the child as her three previous children have all died shortly after birth. The couple have recently moved to the village and the husband Alois explains that they have altered the spelling of the family name to Higler. He tries to lose himself in drink but is summoned for the birth. Eventually the baby boy is born and is very frail and Klara begs for the child to be baptised immediately. Her husband would like to name him after himself but he already has a son by his first wife who is named Alois. He chooses the name Adolphus saying that he hopes that the child's name will not be shortened to Adolf.
