Set in India in 1947, the film is a portrayal of the consequences of Partition for Indian Muslims. The story focuses on one particular family the Mirzas. When Halim Mirza decides to leave for Pakistan, his brother Salim and the rest of the family who are left behind are marginalised, subject to religious bigotry and their loyalty questioned. Eventually they are dependent on the goodwill of the majority community.
