Synopsis
CHAT SHOW. Eamonn Andrews talks with guests Eva Gabor, Barbara Kelly, Bernard Braden and Joe Orton. Music from Vikki Carr; and The Bachelors.
Main title with guest credits (0:45). Television studio and audience. Eamonn Andrews welcomes audience and introduces first guest, Eva Gabor, sister of Zsa Zsa (1:43). Eva Gabor talks about her marriages, and mentions a play she did on Broadway, `The Little Glass Clock'. Cecil Beaton designed costumes and scenery for the play, and also advised her against one of her marriages, which subsequently lasted three weeks (7:30). Vikki Carr sings in the studio `It must be him' (10:48). Applause. Audience. End of part one (11:30). Part two (12:24). Andrews introduces Barbara Kelly and Bernard Braden who have just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Kelly enters (12:58). Brief chat (14:20), before Braden enters and sings `I'm glad there is you'(?) to piano accompaniment (16:55). Braden and Kelly talk about their rare joint appearances on television (18:30) and the reasons their marriage has lasted 25 years (21:25). Kelly regrets marrying at 17. End of Part two (23:42). Part three (24.46). Andrews introduces the three children of Braden and Kelly, who are in the audience: Chris, Kelly and Kim; and Barbara's mother (26:05). The Bachelors sing `Oh how I miss you' in the studio (29:05). Applause. Andrews introduces Joe Orton, who joins the other guests (29:43). He describes his misdemeanours with library books for which he was imprisoned for six months: how he pasted pictures over the picture of the author, and mentions a book of etiquette by Lady Lewisham on which he pasted a picture of a nude woman. Orton says he doesn't regret doing it, and had a marvellous time in prison (32:10). Eva Gabor mentions her enjoyment of `Loot' and Orton talks of the casting problems with both `Loot' and `Entertaining Mr Sloane' due to the reluctance of actors to be associated with the plays. Orton describes problems with the censor, the Lord Chamberlain, who wouldn't allow certain things in `Loot' (34:29). The guests discuss marriage. Orton was married at 20 but it was not a success, and he says it would be impossible to write a play like `Loot' while happily married. They all discuss the necessity of compromise. Orton compares marriage with "being a baby and having to play with the same rattle always" (38:48). Kelly talks about the conventional pressures to marry, while she would have preferred living together before marriage. Andrews asks Braden what's the best quality in a wife, and Kelly what she likes most about her husband (43:57). Andrews closes programme (44:04). Credits (44:33 mins).
