Based on the novel by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. Devdas, from a landed aristocratic family falls in love with Parvati, from a less affluent background. Devdas's family oppose the match and send him to Calcutta to study. Parvati's parents arrange her marriage to a rich old widower. Devdas returns to the village but is unable to prevent the marriage and in desperation, takes to drink and solace with Chandramukhi, a prostitute. He keeps a promise to return to Parvati before he dies but only manages to reach the outskirts of her village before he expires.
