Melodrama of religion and sex in a primitive village on the coast of Nova Scotia. Fred and Nelly, sweethearts in a dour Nova Scotian fishing village, discover that Ben, a hunchback, has been stealing the lobster catch. Nelly is the adopted daughter of Caleb, the lay preacher, and his wife, Aunt Boo. She also discovers that Ben is Aunt Boo's illegitimate son and learns from Ben that the local fisherman will not give him work. Before Fred leaves on a long trip Nelly breaks off the engagement. Ben learns of his parentage, Aunt Boo dies and when Caleb refuses him work he returns to stealing. On his return Fred exposes him but Caleb rescues him from the villagers. Despite Fred's entreaties Nelly leaves with Ben to start a new life.
