A dancer (Washington) with a weak heart is devoted to her husband (Ellington), a struggling musician, and is determined to bring to the public's attention his new composition, even though it may cost her her life. Duke Ellington and his orchestra perform several numbers, including 'Hot Feet', 'The Duke Steps Out', 'Same Train', 'Black and Tan Fantasy', 'Black Beauty' and 'Cotton Club Stomp'. (Believed to be Duke Ellington's first screen appearance).
