Hard Times (1982)

Film details

Synopsis

The main part of the videogram comprises dramatised extracts from the novel by Charles Dickens: a social portrait of a 19th century mill-town, interspersed with contemporary documents, such as the Royal Commission on Trade Unions of 1867, and images of the present day. It also recreates the 15 mile walk by Tess in Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the d'Urbervilles." The journey is illustrated with passages from Hardy's poetry and prose, and evokes the bleakness of a Dorset winter.
