Seven years ago, Holland gave independence to its ex-colony Surinam, since when, over half the working population of Surinam have emigrated to areas in Utrecht and Amsterdam. The film examines how the Dutch government prepared the community for this influx, and what it provide d for the new arrivals in terms of language training, positive discrimination in housing and jobs etc. Constrasts the Surinamese immigrants with that of the West Indian community in Britain
