Variety film. Extracts from the Butchers' productions VARIETY (1935), COCK O' THE NORTH (1935), VARIETY PARADE (1936), LILY OF LAGUNA (1938), MUSIC HALL PARADE (1939), with a linking story recounting the history of a variety theatre. Some of the numbers also feature in the compilation film CAVALCADE OF VARIETY (1941).

The featured acts are as follows:

1) Dudley Rolphe, with John Payne's Negro Choir, sings 'Lily of Laguna' (from LILY OF LAGUNA). 2) Anita Lowe sings 'She's a Lassie from Lancashire' and clog dances (from VARIETY). 3) Naughton and Gold in workmen's sketch (from COCK O' THE NORTH). 4) Robert Chisholm sings 'Le Rêve Passe' (from COCK O' THE NORTH). 5) Olsen's sea lions (from VARIETY). 6) The Sherman Fisher Girls dancing to Billy Cotton and his Band (from MUSIC HALL PARADE). 7) The Houston Sisters comedy act (from VARIETY). 8) G.S. Melvin sings 'The Old Fleecy Lined' (from VARIETY PARADE) - note that the sequence is missing from the Archive print, although it is extant in the other compilation film, CAVALCADE OF VARIETY (1941). 9) The Australian Air Aces (from MUSIC HALL PARADE) - the sequence is slightly longer in CAVALCADE OF VARIETY. 10) Phyllis Robins sings 'This Thing Called Love' (from VARIETY). 11) Billy Cotton and his Band perform 'The Danube Swing', with Ellis Jackson dancing (from MUSIC HALL PARADE) - the number is interrupted by a cutaway to the linking story, but the complete number can be found on CAVALCADE OF VARIETY. 12) Eve Becke sings 'Angelino Piccolino' (from MUSIC HALL PARADE). 13) Billy Cotton and his Band dressed as airmen perform 'Fall in and Fly' (from MUSIC HALL PARADE). 14) Leslie 'Hutch' Hutchinson sings 'Wake' in a night club (from COCK O' THE NORTH). 15) Finale with marching military bands, The Sherman Fisher Girls and Mrs Jack Hylton and her Band performing ' Let's All Go Up in the Sky (from VARIETY PARADE) - a more complete version of this number can be found on CAVALCADE OF VARIETY.

Note: Numbers 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 15 also feature in the compilation film CAVALACADE OF VARIETY (1941).
