April in Paris (1952)

Film details

Musical. A clerical error invites not Ethel Barrymore but New York chorus girl Ethel 'Dynamite' Jackson to represent the American Arts at a cultural festival in Paris. She is thrilled until she learns of the mistake from S. Winthrop Putnam, the civil servant responsible; but when the public reaction to her invitation is very favourable, she gets to go anyway. The voyage across the Atlantic is fraught with romantic complications, as Ethel and Putnam drink champagne, fall in love, believe themselves to have been married by the ship's captain, and then deal with the consequences when Putnam's ambitious fiancée meets him off the boat to accompany him at the festival.
