A story of rebellion and loyalty to the king, Henry III, centring around Clovell, captain of the king's guard, and Baron Breute who governs the province of Rusheford, but is forced to abandon it by Clovell and leaves behind hidden treasure. Learning of the defeat of the king,he turns back, killing on the way Thomas, Clovell's lieutenant, and his men who were going to Clovell's assistance. Lady Eleanor, Clovell's bride, reaches him and warns him. With the help of one villager Clovell kills Breute's men and finally Breute himself. During the fight the treasure is discovered hidden in the village whipping post. Before riding away Clovell restores to the villagers their stolen gold.
