The plight of women in the rag trade in London's east end during the 1840's. The theme is presented by use of stills, graphics and acted reconstruction. The structure of the film in serials, a common technique of Victorian novelists adds to milieu. An experimental drama documentary. An investigation into the position of working women in the 1840s, the effects of protectionist 'philanthropy' and the resistance to it. Deals with a group of women working in the new 'sweated' clothes trade in London and examines their plight via contemporary texts, archival material and acted reconstructions.
