Raise the Titanic (1980)

Film details

Suspense thriller. US intelligence learns that a quantity of a rare mineral, byzanium, that could crucially power a new nuclear defence to the USA, was stowed aboard the Titanic when it sailed from Southampton, and now lies two miles deep in the Atlantic Ocean. In the hope of seizing the byzanium, the President authorises a project to raise the enormous sunken liner. The logistics are headed up by maverick marine salvage expert Dirk Pitt, who plans to insert foam into the wreck to bring it to the surface. Complications arise as the Russians interfere (keen to take the byzanium they feel is rightfully theirs) and as submarines prove too frail for the depths they must work at. With two weeks to go, and lives in danger, Pitt decides that the wreck must be raised within hours. The Russians prepare to take the mineral. Surprises lie in store for all involved.
