The story of H.M.S. Amethyst, the frigate which became famous for its exploits on the Yangtse in 1949. While on a legitimate, peaceful mission on the Yangtse River, the Amethyst is fired upon by Chinese forces, with great loss of life, and comes to a standstill in a mudbank. For some weeks she remains there, unable to move for fear of destruction, while the Navy negotiates with the Chinese Colonel Ping, who wants the British government to claim that the Amethyst illegally opened fire first. Finally, the Amethyst makes a break for freedom, under cover of darkness, hoping to be able to escape the shelling from the Communist forces that line the river for many miles in both directions.
