A respectable married professor is alone in the city for the summer while his family are away. He agrees to meet his friends (including the District Attorney) at their club each evening. One night as he admires a painting in a gallery window near the club, the woman who posed for the portrait turns up, always happy to see someone admiring the picture. They get talking and soon the professor is involved in sinister situation from which he endeavours to free both himself and the woman. But the District Attorney is investigating the matter and the professor fears the truth will catch up with him.
