Synopsis

An apparently light-hearted story of a Japanese family - told from the perspective of a young child - this is actually another of Ichikawa's astringent social satires: a study of the effects of the modern economy on traditional domestic life. Occasionally reminiscent of Ozu's domestic dramas, it has little of his meditative calm: on the contrary, the fractured style and sceptical, ironic tone anticipate the coming Japanese New Wave, while its pop imagery includes a cartoon sequence that pays homage to Ichikawa's background as an animator.
