Variety Girl (1947)

Film details

Comedy musical film tribute to the work of the Variety Club, in which many Paramount stars appear as themselves. A baby girl abandoned in a theatre has her upbringing paid for by a group of kindly producers. Once grown up, and an accomplished singer, she attempts to break into films and travels to Hollywood to audition under the stage name Amber La Vonne (as opposed to her real name Catherine Brown). However, a rival would-be starlet steals her stage name in order to gain a place to stay, and this leads to much confusion in the studio as to who the talented singer and who the ambitious ham actress are. To make things worse, as she tours the sets and attends parties, Catherine keeps accidentally drenching studio boss R.J. O'Connell with water. Bing Crosby helps Catherine get a screen test but the fake Amber ends up in the Variety Club show hosted by Bob Hope, where she plans to mime to Catherine's singing.
