Spring and Port Wine (1970)

Film details

Rafe Crompton presides over his family dispensing order and discipline. His control is dissipated over one weekend. Firstly his daughter Hilda refuses a herring at an evening meal, and he insists it be served up to her at every subsequent meal. Then Florence, the older daughter, leaves with her fiancé after Rafe harshly insists on his youngest son Wilfred confessing to giving the offending herring to the cat. Hilda also leaves for the same reason, and whilst staying with a neighbour discovers she is pregnant. Planning to run away to London she approaches her mother for help. Daisy, Rafe's wife, pawns his new overcoat to help Hilda with money. The deception is discovered and Daisy flees the house. She is however reunited with an anxious Rafe who becomes more flexible and supportive in order to keep his family together and make his wife more happy and relaxed.
